Sharing international experiences on coach development at USA National Coaching Conference

SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators) in association with the United States Coaching Education Coalition (USOC, NCAA, NFHS, NSCA) staged the 2014 National Coaching Conference at the Hilton Crystal City in Arlington, VA June 18–20, 2014. Sarah was delighted to attend and share her international experiences with delegates at the conference.

The National Coaching Conference is the Coalition's opportunity to bring together the foremost leaders in coaching and coaching education to convoke dialogue related to the education and development of coaches and athletes at all levels of competition and expertise. The theme for the 2014 National Coaching Conference was Long-Term Coach Development. Coaching skills are developed over time through, among other things, engaging in the sport environment, working with other coaches, formal education experiences, and the use of reflection. Therefore, a framework for long-term coach development is necessary. This conference will aid in moving coaching education in the United States in that direction.

Sarah was delighted to share her international experiences on two occasions at the Conference.

The first workshop was co-delivered with Dr Christine Nash from the University of Edinburgh and focused on coaching effectiveness and explored how to support coach learning in formal and informal learning environments.

The second presentation shared the findings of recent research conducted as part of her Masters dissertation at the University of Northumbria (supported by Dr Louise Davis) which focused on the effectiveness of the ICECP mentoring programme and independent mentoring relationships.
