Mentoring: A Game Changer for Developing PGA Professionals

Writer's picture: Sarah McQuadeSarah McQuade

In coaching, knowledge isn't just learned—it’s experienced. Nowhere is this more evident than in the work-based environment of PGA Trainees, where every moment on the golf course, in the pro shop, or on the range presents an opportunity for growth. But for this learning to be truly effective, it must be guided, structured, and personalized. This is where mentoring makes all the difference.

For PGA Trainees, mentorship bridges the gap between theory and practice, providing them with tailored learning opportunities that accelerate skill development and boost confidence in real-world scenarios. When supported by experienced PGA Professionals, trainees gain hands-on expertise in critical areas such as:

✔️ Delivering individual and group coaching sessions

✔️ Managing and organizing competitions

✔️ Conducting club repairs and custom fittings

Recognizing the power of mentorship in professional development, e.t.c coaching consultants, led by Linda Low, and Sarah McQuade, partnered with MiMentor (James Baker) to deliver the PGA Trainee Professional Mentoring Program.

Now in its fourth cycle, this transformative initiative welcomed 19 registered club professionals from across Great Britain and Ireland, equipping them with world-class mentoring tools through the PGA MiMentor Platform.

A Blended Learning Approach for Maximum Impact

Over six weeks, the program combined online courses and interactive webinars, ensuring PGA professionals could develop their mentoring skills in a flexible and meaningful way.

Key themes included:

🔹 Introduction to Mentoring – Understanding the role and impact of a mentor

🔹 Profiling and Professional Development Planning – Identifying learning needs and shaping growth pathways

🔹 Mastering the Art of Questioning and Active Listening – Key skills for effective mentorship conversations

🔹 Reflective Development for Growth – Encouraging self-awareness and continuous improvement

The Impact: Stronger Relationships, Deeper Understanding, Better Coaching

The professionals who took part in this program didn’t just enhance their mentoring skills—they transformed the way they connect with trainees. One participant reflected:

The biggest lesson I’ve taken away is the power of asking the right questions and truly listening. Getting to know my trainee—what motivates them, where they need support, and how they learn best—has completely changed the way I support them. I feel far more confident in my ability to mentor them effectively.

This is the power of mentoring. It strengthens the profession by enhancing coaching knowledge, sharpening skills, and fostering a culture of continuous learning.

A huge thank you to Linda Low for their dedication to delivering this program and to the PGA of GB & I for entrusting MiMentor and e.t.c coaching consultants with the opportunity to shape the next generation of PGA Professionals.

Mentorship is the Future of Coaching

With each iteration of this program, we see firsthand how mentoring is reshaping PGA Professional Development in Golf. By embedding mentoring into professional learning, we are not just supporting today’s trainees—we’re shaping the future of the sport.
